For two decades, he held a number of positions with Whole Foods Market, including president and COO of the southeast region, and in 2000 began advising food industry startups and established businesses.
Recently, he was project manager for the startup food co-op Durham Central Market. In addition to his extensive retail experience, he is also currently serving as an elected member of the Durham City Council. Don also has a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Kenan-Flagler Business School.
Don thrives in atmospheres that demand initiative, improvement and collaboration, which is why he enjoys assisting co-op clients with their business growth and development as community leaders. He understands that technical assistance for cooperatives includes delivering on the needs of owners and the community.
“I work with co-ops because of how they contribute to local economic development, and also serve as a third place in a community,” he said. Don’s skills include early stage development assistance, from expansion planning, pro formas and real estate reviews, to fundraising and coaching. “One critical service I bring clients is the ability to look at a new project through a financial lens to determine how feasible it is likely to be.”
